Irezumi Inspiration in Contemporary Street Graphics

Irezumi art powers some of streetwear's boldest graphics — but respect for the tradition matters as much as the image.

Irezumi — traditional Japanese tattooing — carries centuries of symbolism. Dragons, koi, cherry blossoms, waves and mythological figures translate naturally to streetwear graphics, but the best designs study the art form rather than slap a clip-art dragon on cotton.
