Winter Layering Guide: Japanese Streetwear in Cold Weather

Tokyo winters hover above freezing, but wind and damp air bite. Locals layer smart — not bulky — using thin heat-tech bases, mid-layer hoodies or knits, and outer shells that block wind without hiding the outfit.

Layer stack

1. Base — heat-tech tee or long sleeve
2. Mid — hoodie, sweatshirt or light knit
3. Outer — MA-1, wool coat, padded jacket or tech shell

Bottom half

Wide wool trousers, heavy denim or lined cargos with room for thermal leggings. Cuffed hems show sneakers; stack cleanly over boots when snow appears up north.
